Business rates for hairdressers and beauty salons (2026/27)
Hairdressers, barbers and beauty salons pay business rates on their premises. Salons that got retail, hospitality and leisure relief in 2025/26 will usually be eligible for the lower 38.2p multiplier in England for 2026/27; your council decides. A single salon worth £12,000 or less pays nothing under small business rate relief.
Which multiplier applies
Hair and beauty businesses that got retail, hospitality and leisure relief in 2025/26 will usually be eligible for the lower RHL multipliers (38.2p / 43p). Your council decides, so ask if your bill uses the standard rate.
| Rateable value (England, 2026/27) | Standard | Retail, hospitality and leisure |
|---|---|---|
| Under £51,000 | 43.2p | 38.2p |
| £51,000 to £499,999 | 48p | 43p |
| £500,000 or more | 50.8p | 50.8p |
How hair and beauty salons are valued
Salons are usually valued like shop units: floor area and a price per m², often zoned. Compare with shop units of a similar size on the same street.
Reliefs to ask about
- Small business rate relief: nothing to pay in England if it’s your business’s only property and the rateable value is £12,000 or less; tapering to £15,000.
- Supporting small business relief if you lost relief at the 2026 revaluation, and transitional relief if your bill is rising because of it.
- Renting a chair in someone else’s salon: the salon’s ratepayer usually pays the rates, not you.
- Hairdressing at home: you may not pay business rates, but it depends how the space is used. See GOV.UK: working at home.
- Wales: salons are not covered by the Welsh retail multiplier.

Questions
Do hairdressers get the retail, hospitality and leisure multiplier?
GOV.UK says businesses that received retail, hospitality and leisure relief in 2025/26 will usually be eligible for the new RHL multipliers, and hairdressers were within that relief. Your council confirms eligibility.
